The Windsor Spitfires got off to a slow start at the 2009 edition of junior hockey's marquee event - the same cannot be said this year....
The Ontario Hockey League champions scored four goals in the first 4:45 of the first period against the Brandon Wheat Kings and cruised to a 9-3 victory to open the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup.
Hear from Windsor's Adam Henrique and Matt Calvert of Brandon in the Memorial Cup post-game show.
Henrique, Taylor Hall and Scott Timmins scored two goals apiece for the Spitfires while Zack Kassian, Dale Mitchell and Kenny Ryan rounded out the offensive outburst. Calvert, Jay Fehr and Aaron Lewadniuk replied for the Wheat Kings. It was an embarrassing opening for the WHL Eastern Conference finalists, who had not played a game since April 23. Much of the talk heading into the game was which starting goaltender Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon would give the nod to for the opener. He went with Andrew Hayes, despite playing in only three games during the WHL playoffs. Hayes allowed five goals on 23 shots in the first period before being relieved by Jacob De Serres the rest of the way. McCrimmon avoided questions after the game as to who would start Sunday's game against Moncton.
Game Two of the tournament is Saturday at 3pm EDT when the WHL champion Calgary Hitmen take on the Moncton Wildcats, the champions of the QMJHL.
