Former OHL 1st overall pick John McFarland is heading east....
The Saginaw Spirit have traded John McFarland to the Ottawa 67's in return for rookie forward David Perklin and a fourth round pick in 2014. McFarland was a second round pick of the Florida Panthers in the 2010 NHL Draft. After beginning his career in Sudbury he was dealt to Saginaw last season, and had 41 points in 36 games this season. His best performance of this season came against his new teammates when he scored four goals November 11 at Ottawa. McFarland played minor hockey with 67's star Tyler Toffoli. It will be interesting to see if they are paired up, or Ottawa GM/Coach Chris Byrne uses them on different lines to look for more depth.
Perklin was the 67's first round pick in the 2011 OHL Priority Selection but the big winger was held pointless in 31 games in Ottawa. He was a member of the talented Toronto Marlboros minor midget team that won the OHL Cup last season.
