Doyle: Watching the Western Conference
As the dust settles on this Wednesday night in the OHL, here's where we stand in the Western Conference:
Doyle: Cameron's quad stomps Fronts
The Belleville Bulls and Kingston Frontenacs met tonight for the first time since their January 27th game that featured a line brawl and resulted in multiple suspensions. But on this night, it was Bulls sophomore Bryan Cameron that stole the show.
Doyle: Kingston Construction Continues
It looks like the new Kingston Arena project will continue as planned, despite the recent hiccups. The Kingston Whig-Standard is reporting:
Mayor Harvey Rosen stopped a motion to kill the downtown arena in its tracks, ruling it out of order during a council meeting tonight. The decision means construction will continue on the downtown arena.
Sources had told me heading into the meeting the mayor may block the vote because this council is not allowed to undo any by-laws put in place by the previous council in its first year.
Doyle: OHLers involved in NHL Deadline
There were plenty of OHL connections to the NHL Trade Deadline Day deals.
Doyle: No Shootouts in Playoffs
While most of the fans attending Sunday's Saginaw Spirit/Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds game at The Dow Event Center in Saginaw went home happy, it may have given us another reason why almost all hockey fans say "Never put shootouts into the playoffs"
Doyle: Bulls goalie almost steals one
When people think of the Belleville Bulls and goaltending, the name Kevin Lalande usually comes to mind. But on Saturday night, it was Mike Murphy who was the star of the show in Saginaw.
Doyle: Weekend Preview
Some storylines I will be following this weekend include:
-Friday night's Sault Ste. Marie at London game. The Greyhounds have been playing well lately, will a trip into the JLC be a gauge of where the Soo stands heading into the post-season?
Doyle: Fronts win a snoozer
Thursday night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre was not one of the most exciting game you will ever see in the Ontario Hockey League. But that was just fine for the visiting Kingston Frontenacs.
Doyle: Whalers close-in on another West Title
The Plymouth Whalers moved two points closer to winning another West Division Title thanks to a 4-0 road victory over the Saginaw Spirit Wednesday night.
Doyle: Kingston Arena still up in the air
Kingston City Council called it a night around 11:20pm Tuesday without holding a vote on the motion to shut down the project that would see a new arena and entertainment centre built.
Doyle: Knights win in the Wild Wild (Mid)West
The Kitchener Rangers and London Knights had not played each other since November 16th, but that didn't stop the two rivals from playing a heated playoff-like affair. But it was not decided in playoff fashion - the Knights beat the Rangers 4-3 in a shootout.
Doyle: Otters Lee gets 8 games
Erie Otters forward Patrick Lee has been hit with an eight game suspension for his check on London Knights sniper Sam Gagner on February 11th in Erie.
Doyle: Weekend OHL stories revisited
Now that the OHL weekend has wrapped up its time to take a look back at the stories I thought would be of note coming into this weekend, and a couple new ones that popped up.
Doyle: Kane stopped at 13
Despite another win by the London Knights Saturday evening at home against Kingston, there was one mini-negative for the Knights. Sniper Patrick Kane had his goal scoring streak snapped at 13 games.
Doyle: Downie's the Star in Peterborough
You can probably count on one hand the number of times Steve Downie has been cheered when he's been a visitor in an OHL building. Sure, there have been those moments where he was honoured by the home team for being apart of Team Canada. But tonight was different.
Doyle: Stupid Computers!
Just when you think it's safe to put your feet up and watch some OHL Hockey - you find out your hal.dll file is corrupt!
Doyle: OHL Stories to Watch This Weekend
Here is a look at some of the storylines I think will be interesting to watch for this weekend in the OHL.
Doyle: To be a Rookie, or not.....
While taping the OHL Roundtable for TVCogeco today an interesting debate came up. It is not the first time it's come up and certainly won't be the last. What players should be eligible for OHL Rookie of the Year?
Doyle: Monday Morning Misc.
Just some random thoughts from around the OHL off the top of my head for a Monday morning.
Doyle: A great game that nobody saw
The situation with the Mississauga IceDogs is somewhat unfortunate when it comes to the players and coaches. They are caught in the middle of the front-office dealings regarding the future of the franchise. Here is the highest scoring team in the Ontario Hockey League, and a club that could make a run for top spot in the Eastern Conference - yet nobody is there to see them play. Sunday was a perfect example as the IceDogs played host to the Saginaw Spirit. It was a great game involving two teams that know how to put the puck in the net. Yet, the attendance was low and there was no TV coverage.
Doyle: Tragedy Strikes OHL Referee
There are times in this world of hockey when reality strikes, and it makes you take a step back and re-evaulate some of your priorities, and the following story may do just that. Recently, OHL referee Terry Hobor lost his wife Michelle at the age of 32 to cancer.
Doyle: Petes outlast Storm in shootout
On Saturday night, 60 minutes only decided that the Peterborough Petes and Guelph Storm were guaranteed one point out of their game at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. The five-minute overtime brought the hit of the night with Drew Doughty connecting with Yves Bastien. But it was not until a shootout before the Petes and Storm determined who would come away with two points.
Doyle: Saginaw blows away the Storm
The Saginaw Spirit opened a three game in three nights road trip with authority Friday night - a 7-2 victory over the Guelph Storm. The Spirit were all smiles with the return of Patrick McNeill and Andrew Hotham from injury. But Mitch Maunu is day-to-day with a "lower body injury".
Doyle: Will the real Marty Williamson please stand up?
Just a little fun note for a Friday afternoon. Does Marty Williamson get any respect? He helped lead the Barrie Colts to the Eastern Conference Final last season before losing to the eventual champion Peterborough Petes in a tough series. Or what about the fact they are the Eastern Conference leaders this year?
Doyle: WHL's Spokane Chiefs Go Pink
The Western Hockey League's Spokane Chiefs may be taking breast cancer awareness fundraisers to a whole new level. We've seen pink sticks and pink ribbons on the helmets. But what about PINK ICE?
Doyle: Petes Sting MacQueen's Birthday
Sarnia Sting Head Coach Dave MacQueen celebrated his 48th birthday Thursday in the place he won his first OHL Championship - Peterborough. It was his Sarnia Sting visiting the Petes. Now, at this point in time of the season, the Peterborough Petes will take a win anyway they can get it. Thursday night as no exception as they held on in the dying moments of the second and third periods to beat the Sarnia Sting 4-3.
Doyle: Friday Night NHL Draft
The NHL has decided to change things up for this year's NHL Draft in Columbus. While it will return to being a two-day affair, the format will change.
Doyle: Home Sweet Home? Maybe.
This has to be one of the strangest OHL seasons when it comes to looking at some of the Home and Road records of a handful of teams. The league has always been known as one where the home team usually dominates. This is not necessarily the case this year.
Doyle: Steelback Centre a nice addition to the OHL
Made my first visit to the Steelback Centre recently and while I didn’t get a chance to take the grand tour, it was still a nice experience. When you first arrive, it looks like most new arenas, with Guelph probably being the most similar. The old lighthouse is still intact, which I think is a great touch to link the past and the former Soo Memorial Gardens to the new facility.
Doyle: Saginaw puts on All Star Show
Alright, so a lot of people think of All-Star hockey games and say - “Boring!” I always wonder what those people are expecting out of it?
Are they expecting a fight? A big centre ice hit? Rightly or wrongly stay-at-home defencemen are not normally picks for the All-Star Game. It’s all about goals baby! The 2007 OHL All-Star Classic had no shortage of that with the league record being broken with 22 goals being scored Wednesday night at The Dow Event Center. Was it the most exciting hockey game I’ve ever seen? Ummm, no!
