Doyle: Guelph slides past Oil Kings

The Guelph Storm had just over one week to celebrate their OHL Championship Title and get ready for the 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup. After their first game, it appears the club picked up right where it left off in the OHL playoffs.

Kerby Rychel and Tyler Beruzzi scored two goals apiece while Brock McGinn added a single as the Storm (1-0) beat the WHL Champion Edmonton Oil Kings 4-2 Saturday. Henrik Samuelsson and Ashton Sautner replied for Edmonton (0-1).

The first period featured a lot of physical play, but the Oil Kings took that one step too far with a late roughing penalty. Rychel capitalized on the powerplay to send the Storm to the first intermission with the lead. Edmonton responded in the second period with two quick goals to take the lead. But the strong Guelph club bounced right back with Rychel scoring an odd goal after a puck bounced off of him and behind Edmonton goalie Tristan Jarry. McGinn's goal later in the period proved to be the winner before Bertuzzi iced it with two in the third period.

Guelph's next game will be a battle of teams with a win already under their belt as they play Val D'Or Monday. Edmonton is right back on the ice Sunday when they play the host London Knights (0-1). The winner will be assured of advancing to at least a tiebreaker game, while the winner runs the risk of going winless in the tournament.

Notes:
The Stanley Cup arrived in London Saturday with fans lining up to have their picture taken with Lord Stanley's mug. The Budweiser Clydesdales also made a visit, giving phone and digital cameras a heavy workout.

The announced attendance at Budweiser Gardens was 8,842. The arena's capacity is slightly reduced during Memorial Cup compared to regular season games. The 300-level standing room has been replaced by media seating.
