Doyle: Edmonton Oil Kings capture 2014 Memorial Cup

The Guelph Storm entered the 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup Championship Game as the favourite against the Edmonton Oil Kings after going through the round robin on cruise control. But "on any given Sunday..." anything can happen in junior hockey.

On this Sunday, it was Oil Kings forward Henrik Samuelsson, a draft pick of the Phoenix Coyotes, who scored five points to lift Edmonton to a 6-3 win over Guelph - capturing the Memorial Cup title. Edgars Kulda had three points in the game, finishing the tournament with seven points and was named tournament MVP.

Things were looking up for the Storm when Robby Fabbri scored 60 seconds into the game. But Guelph ran into penalty trouble, going down two men before Edmonton defenceman Cody Corbett scored his first goal of tournament to even the score. The OHL Champions would restore their lead later in the opening frame off the stick of Stephen Pierog - going to the first intermission ahead by a goal.

But the second period was controlled by Edmonton, who were rewarded with three unanswered goals. Tyler Robertson took advantage of a Guelph turnover off the faceoff to tie the game. Then goals by Kulda, on the powerplay, and Mitchell Moroz resulted in the Oil Kings going to the second intermission up by a pair.

Guelph, playing in front of numerous fans who made the 120km trip from Guelph to London, looked to have life in the third period when Zack Mitchell buried a pass from Kerby Rychel to bring the Storm back to without a goal. But that was short-lived thanks to the quick hands of Samuelsson. He would also add an empty net goal later in the period to ice the victory for the Oil Kings.
