Doyle: Generals clinch berth in Memorial Cup Final
The Oshawa Generals will play for the Memorial Cup on Sunday.
...The Generals held off a late press by the Kelowna Rockets to pick up a 2-1 win to wrap up tournament round-robin play for both teams. Oshawa was a perfect 3-0, clinching the top spot and championship game spot.
After a scoreless first period, Cole Cassels converted a Dakota Mermis pass behind Kelowna starter Jackson Whistle to put the OHL champions in front. With less than three minutes remaining in the middle frame, Tobias Lindberg continued his strong tournament, completing a nice toe-drag move in the slot to give the Generals a two-goal lead. But the Rockets bounced back less than a minute later when Gage Quinney fought off a check while driving to the net to score his third of the tournament.
The tournament round robin wraps up Wednesday with the host Quebec Remparts (1-1) taking on their QMJHL rivals Rimouski Oceanic (0-2). While the Oceanic need a win to force a tiebreaker game Thursday, it would likely be against the Remparts. Kelowna (1-2) is virtually assured of a spot in Friday night's semifinal game due to goals for/goals against formulas - used to separate teams who finish the tournament in a three-way tie. Rimouski would need to beat the Remparts by eight goals Wednesday to take Kelowna's semi-final berth, and put the Rockets and Remparts into the tiebreaker.
