Sapurji: Major fists fly in Peterborough
The Sudbury Wolves will be facing a short-handed Mississauga squad on Sunday afternoon after a wild night for the Majors in Peterborough.
...The Majors will be without the services of forwards Riley Brace and Devante Smith-Pelly after the two were both involved in fights during the last five minutes of the Petes 5-1 victory on Saturday night. Each were handed instigator penalties, which carry automatic two-game suspensions.
There were also four separate "misc. abuse of official (40.4)" penalties to the Majors T.J. Battani, Rob Flick, Casey Cizikas and the Petes Matt Puempel. According to one OHL coach, those particular infractions are not automatic suspensions and are considered more like 10 minute misconducts -- that information was later confirmed by Majors head coach/GM Dave Cameron via text.
NOTE: Another OHL insider just texted to say those penalties are for "verbal abuse" and do not carry any suspension.
Smith-Pelly leads the Majors in scoring -- tied with Cizikas -- with 29 goals and 32 assists in 58 games.
Brace has also been a key contributor with 17 goals and 19 assists in 64 games.
The Majors will also be without defencemen Cameron Gaunce and Stuart Percy for the game against Sudbury, though they are expected back before the start of the playoffs.
"I expect (Gaunce) back Thursday versus Niagara," said Cameron after Friday's win over Brampton. "So should Percy -- we expect him back too. We should all be healthy (for the playoffs)."
