Sapurji: Majors on a secret Missiaen?

Found out late Sunday night that the Peterborough Petes filed an official complaint with the OHL over the conversation in Game 1 between Majors forward Rob Flick and one of the referees.

The conversation -- which was first reported on LPs -- took place before Flick scored on a penalty shot in the third period, just 13 seconds after the Petes had taken a 2-1 lead in the game.

Two things should be made clear:

1. The referee who awarded Flick the penalty shot, was not the one who spoke to Flick
2. After Flick made his comments about his conversation with the referee, I asked him which referee it was - but he didn’t even know the guy’s name (he proceeded to describe the official). So it’s not like they’re tight.

At the end of the day, Rob Flick beat Petes goalie Jason Missiaen one-on-one - there was no screen, there was no magic or trickery. Missiaen even said so himself.

“He just made a move and slipped it five-hole,” said Missiaen after the game. “So I wouldn’t say he tricked me, he just managed to beat me on it.”

Missiaen makes the save and this is not even a blog entry.

"I will say it was concerning enough to us and frustrating enough we brought it to the league's attention," Petes GM Jeff Twohey told the Peterborough Examiner. "We'll leave it with them and hope they deal with it appropriately."

Should Captain Obvious the referee have kept his mouth shut? Probably. But having spoken to a now-retired OHL official, these kinds of impromptu convos between players and officials happen all the time.

Do the Petes really think the fact that Jason Missiaen is a big goalie with a big five-hole, is top secret? Or that the Majors coaching staff hasn’t done their due diligence and broken down every single aspect of the Petes’ netminding already? Please.

Blake Parlett also scored for the Majors on the five-hole, so I guess the cat is out of the bag for Game 2 Monday Night in Peterborough.

To be honest, I was very surprised to hear the Petes decided to make a big deal over something fairly innocuous. The only thing more surprising was that we now have confirmation someone in the Petes office reads Loosepucks.com.

But hey, it’s playoffs, and maybe this is just another part of post-season gamesmanship?
